My latest musical obsession - The Gaslight Anthem. It doesn't hurt that their Pandora channel plays Against Me! and Weezer. But boy oh boy, do I love this song. You should too. Because I know that all two of you who actually read this blog take every word I say to heart and make it your creed to follow every single suggestion I make. Enjoy.
That's right, sucka, it's my birthday. Has been for over an hour. So, what am I doing up? Why, I'm working half a grave shift, of course. Isn't that what everyone does on their birthday? Oh, just me...
On a plus side, Christy loves me. She shows it many ways: cooking me food, letting me buy fruit snacks in bulk, listening to me incessantly ramble on and on about grad school when I haven't even taken the GRE or applied to a single school yet, and of course, she puts up with a lot of my music. Like Portugal. The Man.
Yes, there's supposed to be a period after Portugal. Don't ask me why, there just is. They are playing tonight. On my birthday. In SLC. Huzzah!
I hope they play this...
And this...
They make me smile lots. Which is good, because I'm working half a grave shift, and babykins isn't doing so well with the whole sleeping thing tonight. And now I'm old, which gives me one more reason to be cranky. Win.
So, a friend of mine from Calgary put this up on their Facebook, and I thought it was worth a try. Here's the deal. I have put my itunes on shuffle. I will write the first two lines of each of the first 25 songs, regardless of embarrassment level. I will check off each song as someone guesses correctly. Yes, it is considered cheating if you use a search engine. I may not know, but someone, somewhere will. Ready? GO!

Alright. Admittedly, I am a music nerd. I know lots of pointless stuff. I play a few pointless instruments. I want to purchase a tambourine. If that doesn't scream nerd to you, then just hold on to your tray tables.
I download and listen to a podcast on a regular basis. The AP Show is put out by Alternative Press magazine, and is a pretty good way for me to listen to new music, either by my favorite bands or bands I haven't heard of. The most recent one played a song by an artist called Girl Talk. Girl Talk can't be called a band, because it's only one guy. And he does mash ups, and they are amazing. For those of you who don't know what a mash up is, allow me to quote wikipedia
"A mash-up is a song created out of pieces of two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another... Mash-ups are incredible fun and a fascinating way to reexperience some of your favorite tunes." (read the full article here)
The fact that you can take and sample a bunch of completely unrelated songs and create new ones, and they all sync up to the same beat amazes me. It's something I'd like to get into. But, it takes a lot of work. For example, Girl Talk's "Feed the Animals" cd, which is currently for download, and you can pay the same price you paid for Radiohead's "In Rainbows" (whatever you want, ask me, and I will give you the address) is just a hair over 53 minutes long and has at least 280 different samples if not more. Everything from Radiohead to Jay Z to Ben Folds Five to Journey to Queen to Vanilla Ice to Dr. Dre to Twisted Sister to Prince to the Beach Boys (and more!). It's amazing.
But, probably only if you are a music geek like myself.
First, I had planned to write up an entire blog on who makes the worst type of nemesis, but that will have to wait until later. Possibly tomorrow. Second, The reason behind the delay? It's that man sitting in a bathtub full of Skittles . REGGIE! Reggie and the Full Effect have come back together. I guess that they would say they never broke up, since they are just one man, so how can you break up with yourself, but they(he) stopped making music for a while. And yesterday (a little behind, but hey, I'm doing the whole dad thing, so give me a break) I found out that the just released a new cd. Norte is on his way, as I type this, to buy it for me. And because my wife loves me, she is letting me go to the SLC show on his farewell tour.
For those of you who don't know, I am a big, big fan of RATFE (it's shorter, and almost makes sense). Cds, t-shirts, stickers, I've got them all. And now I'm going to see him go out in style. If you'd like to join us, feel free. If not, then thanks for letting me ramble on about a band that a vast majority of you have never heard. Nemesis type blog next time! For now, chiggity-check out "Congratulations Smack & Katy," a rat-tastic song and one of the coolest music videos ever.
I just thought that I would start posting some top 5 lists. I don't know why. I don't know if it matters, either. But for this first one, just realize that I am at work, and have had to deal with an enormous amount (even larger than usual) of stupidity today. So, I give to you, my top 5 angry songs. They are usually good songs to blast right after you got a speeding ticket, or something else of that nature. Really riles up the senses. So without further ado:
5) My Own Summer (Shove It) by Deftones - This song has everything an angry song needs: a screaming chorus, repetitive guitar riffs, and instruments tuned to drop whatever. Amazing. The kind of thing you want to listen to as you watch people walk up and down the left side of a stairway or sidewalk.
4) I Hate Everyone by Get Set Go - For those who don't know, Get Set Go combine light hearted melodies with the most spiteful lyrics known to man. Plus, Mike TV is the kind of guy who actually writes down, and then sings, the crap that most of us think and wouldn't dream of uttering. He should write a song about people who don't know the difference between "you're" and "your".
3) Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon by The Blood Brothers - First off, I deep heart luff The Blood Brothers. So sad they broke up last year. However, if yelps are any indication, then this song is meant to be listened to loudly at red lights after having just been cut off by the last car to make it through the green.
2) Ladies and Gentlemen: My Brother, The Failure by Thursday - After the one and a half second drum intro, when the guitars jump in with the main riff, the energy is so tense that you can just punch slow moving people in the back of the head, and not even have to worry about the consequences.
1) Cold Cash and Colder Hearts by Thrice - Jump to 1:59 in the song, and then you will know what I mean. This song is held together by Riley Breckenridge on drums. He's amazing, and his energy is what drives this song. Play this while you are stuck behind the car that is driving 5 mph below the speed limit with its turn signal on.
Now Rawk it! And don't let the stupidity of the world get you down.
